What golf clubs to buy for a 14 year old boy?

DJ asked:

It seems there arent many golf clubs for that age group. Ladies golf clubs would be a fine fit, but this is for a boy. Is it best just to buy a regular set and instruct him to grip it quite low?

It is not best to buy a regular set of clubs for him. Nice top of the line clubs are much better and will teach him how to hit the ball longer and striaghter. If you don’t have the money for top of the line clubs I would sugest going to Dick’s sporting goods and getting him an acuity set for $200 dollars if there on sale.

Watch for them in the classified ads in the newspaper. As kids grow they are too big for the youth clubs and they want to sell them. They can buy adult size clubs with the money.

Have a local shop fit him.

It doesn’t have to be a real expensive set.
Doesn’t cost any more for a custom fit.
You can fit him so they last a couple of years. If you have to cut them down make sure it’s to a length that will last a year or more.

Standard length clubs work for a person as short as 5′8″

When he reaches his final height then buy him a better set fit to match him.

Get fitted at a local golf shop. Ping makes great clubs.

I’m 14 and have regular size golf clubs, if you buy him ladies clubs he’ll just out grow them in a matter of years or maybe even months

Ladies clubs are good but maybe not strong enough for a young boy. Buy a used womens set so when he gets bigger and they dont fit yoiu dont have to buy a whole new set. You can get a mens set and have them custom fitted and they can cut the clubs down but thats really expensive and then you have to buy another set when he outgrows that one. You can buy a set big for him but the most he should have to choke down is about 2 inches any lnger than that will be hard and the clubs will be heavier.

Get an inexpensive set that fits him well (ladies clubs are fine if they are the right size), then when he grows to nearly full height, get him re-fitted with men’s clubs.

Playing with clubs that are too long will result in bad swing habits.
